About the project

Commissioned in 2022 by a couple relocating from London, The Linhay replaces a collapsed 1960s barn on the edge of a working farm near Stamford. The brief was simple: a four-bedroom family home that reads as agricultural from the lane, opens up to the valley behind, and will weather into the landscape rather than sit on top of it.

We settled on a low oak-framed form with a black-stained larch skin and a lime-mortared plinth. Windows are deep-set, reveals are generous, and the roof pitch picks up the angle of the neighbouring cart shed. From the lane it reads as a simple agricultural shed; from the garden side, a double-height glazed slot opens the whole ground floor to a walled kitchen garden.
